Midwifery Society of Nepal Holds Awareness Rally; Announces Upcoming Mannequin Donation and SimBegin Training for International Day of the Midwife

The Midwifery Society of Nepal (MIDSON) successfully conducted a public awareness program this morning, featuring a morning procession (Prabhat Feri) and street plays, to educate citizens on the importance of midwifery education, services, and the critical role of midwives in the nation’s healthcare system.

The event took place on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, to raise public awareness about why midwives are needed, who benefits from their services, and what kind of care they provide. The assembly point for the program was Patan Hospital Premises, from where the procession proceeded along the route passing through Jawalakhel, Pulchowk, and Mangal Bazaar, before dissolving in front of Krishna Mandir, with Chiri Babu Maharjan, Mayor of Lalitpur Municipality, serving as the Chief Guest.

Through theatrical performances and community outreach along the route, MIDSON highlighted the essential nature of skilled midwifery care for maternal and newborn health. The Society also emphasized the urgent need to enhance the knowledge, skills, and competencies of practicing midwives to keep pace with evolving healthcare demands.

Upcoming Activities for International Day of the Midwife

As part of the ongoing celebration of the International Day of the Midwife, the Midwifery Society of Nepal announced two separate activities to be carried out in the coming days:

Mannequin Distribution: With support from Laerdal Global Health, the Midwifery Society of Nepal (MIDSON) will provide midwifery-related training mannequins to the skill labs of several institutions where midwifery students are currently studying. For this purpose, MIDSON has announced a call for applications from midwifery education institutes. The donation aims to enhance hands-on practical education for future midwives.

SimBegin Training: With joint support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Laerdal Global Health, MIDSON will conduct a specialized SimBegin Training program will also be conducted to further strengthen the clinical skills and simulation-based learning capabilities of midwifery educators and students.

These upcoming events underscore a growing commitment to improving maternal health outcomes in Nepal by investing in quality midwifery education and practical training, in addition to public awareness.
